Streptococcus pneumoniae can produce more than a hundred types of structurally distinct capsular polysaccharides (CPS). The CpsJ flippase is responsible for transporting the lipid-linked CPS precursors across the cell membrane during capsule biosynthesis. My work involves understanding the substrate specificity of the capsule flippase of the pneumococcus.
